Hayley Wilson - Skateboarding

DOB: 29.10.2001

Hayley Wilson is 17 years old. She was born and grew up in the town of Mansfield, Victoria with her mum Catriona, Dad James and older brother Liam. Mansfield is a very active community with many outdoor pursuits, so she began skateboarding, snowboarding, playing tennis and surfing. She started skateboarding at the age of 8 when her brother saw a skateboard in a variety shop and suggested she buy it and she's never looked back.

She competed and won her first competition at the age of 8 and for the next 8 years her Mum and Dad drove her to Skate Park League Competitions right across Australia. The Mansfield Community have been so supportive of her following her dreams and from the age of 10 until 16 she worked on the committee to see a new skatepark built for future generations. At the age of 15 she was thrilled to join the Nike SB Team and age 16 was awarded a Future Talent Scholarship at the Victorian Institute of Sport. With the assistance of so many people, she has been fortunate to achieve two of her goals already; podium placings at Street League and X-Games. She looks forward to embracing the SAHOF Scholarship and Mentoring program and working towards her next goal; representing Australia in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games where skateboarding will make its debut.

Hayley: “It is a huge honour to be selected as a SAHOF Scholarship Recipient and I look forward to and will be totally committed to working with my mentor, Kevin Sheedy. It is an honour to be able to work with a sporting great who has a wealth of knowledge and experience and I look forward to being a mentee working with Kevin in areas such as life balance, striving for excellence and success, and dealing with set backs due to injury. It will truly be a once in a lifetime opportunity which I will embrace.”

Mentor Kevin Sheedy AO (Coach - Australian Football)

“During my career I have been fortunate to gain knowledge from my mentors and believe now is the time for me to share that with Hayley an aspiring athlete from another sport.”

NSO Quote: Karen Doyle, Skate Australia President

“On behalf of the Board of Skate Australia, we are all thrilled that Hayley has been awarded a 2020 SAHOF Scholarship and that Kevin Sheedy AO will be her mentor throughout the scholarship program.

Hayley is a young woman with her sights set firmly on competing for Australia at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in Street Skateboarding. We are excited for what the future will bring. As an icon of Australian sport, I am sure Kevin will be able to give Hayley the benefit of his wisdom and experience in elite sport.”

When considering the stature of an athlete or for that matter any person, I set great store in certain qualities which I believe to be essential in addition to skill. They are that the person conducts his of her life with dignity, with integrity, courage, and perhaps most of all, with modesty. These virtues are totally compatible with pride, ambition, and competitiveness.
