“When considering the stature of an athlete or for that matter any person, I set great store in certain qualities which I believe to be essential in addition to skill. They are that the person conducts his of her life with dignity, with integrity, courage, and perhaps most of all, with modesty. These virtues are totally compatible with pride, ambition, and competitiveness.”

Sir Donald Bradman speaking at his induction into The Sport Australia Hall of Fame, 1985

Established in 2003, Etihad Airways is the flag carrier airline of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Etihad is based in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Etihad is the Arabic abbreviation for United Arab Emirates. It operates services to the Middle East, Europe, Indian subcontinent, North America, Far East, Africa, Central Asia, and Oceania. Its main base is Abu Dhabi International Airport.

Etihad Airways aims to increase its passenger numbers in 2009 to seven million, an increase of 15 per cent, that will maintain its position as the world's fastest-growing commercial airline. From its hub in Abu Dhabi, Etihad Airways continues to develop its global flight network, with Melbourne, Australia's second largest city, the first of a series of new cities to be added to the airline's growing flight network in 2009.

Etihad currently has a fleet of 44 aircraft, with three aircraft already delivered in the first quarter of 2009 and a further eight new aircraft coming later this year, bringing the airline's fleet to more than 50 aircraft. The new narrow-body aircraft will help support the launch this summer of new services to Astana, Kazakhstan; Istanbul, Turkey; Athens, Greece and Larnaca, Cyprus; as well as frequency increases on other routes such as Moscow. The new wide body A340s will also be used to support the new Chicago route
which launched in September, 2009.

Whilst there is plenty ahead for the airline, there has also been much to celebrate in 2009. The airline scooped one of the world's most prestigious industry awards when it won the World Airline Awards, run by UK-based consultancy Skytrax, for having the best business class in the world following a global poll by 16 million air travellers. The airline also won the world's best business class catering award.

The airline's global sponsorships continue to position it as one of the world's fastest growing and most recognisable brands, with its support of the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix gathering plenty of speed. The addition of a special F1 logo on its aircraft is the latest promotional move by the airline, which is helping to take the Middle East's showpiece event to a global audience and to all corners of the world.
