A message from Sport Australia Hall of Fame Chair John Bertrand AO on the bushfire crisis.

As our country continues to be ravaged by bushfires I want to send my sincere condolences to those Australians directly impacted by the bushfire crisis.

I reiterate the sentiments of Sport Australia Hall of Fame Legend Dawn Fraser who posted on 23 December “Stay strong all our wonderful firefighters. You are all true heroes.”

We are in awe of our amazing firefighters, emergency service workers and incredible band of volunteers who have worked tirelessly to protect our communities. They have shown great courage, commitment and have been an inspiration to us all.

This is a devastating time for all Australians. The loss of human life, of livelihoods, stock, wildlife and infrastructure is profound.  Regardless the reports of courage sacrifice and mateship is a reflection of the intrinsic Australian Spirit.

To our Members spread across the land, please know that we are with you in spirit.

"To everyone - please stay safe and look out for each other during this difficult time."

When considering the stature of an athlete or for that matter any person, I set great store in certain qualities which I believe to be essential in addition to skill. They are that the person conducts his of her life with dignity, with integrity, courage, and perhaps most of all, with modesty. These virtues are totally compatible with pride, ambition, and competitiveness.
