“When considering the stature of an
athlete or for that matter any person, I set
great store in certain qualities which I
believe to be essential in addition to
skill. They are that the person conducts
his of her life with dignity, with integrity,
courage, and perhaps most of all,
with modesty. These virtues are totally
compatible with pride, ambition, and
competitiveness.”

Sir Donald Bradman speaking at his
induction into The Sport Australia Hall of
Fame, 1985

Michael Doohan AM - Motorcycling

Few people have dominated a sport internationally as comprehensively as Michael Doohan dominated 500 cc motor cycle racing in the 1990s wen he won 54 Grand Prix events.

He was world campion for five consecutive years 1994-98 and set records for the most Grand Prix wins in a season (12) and the most Grand Prix Points won in a season (340).

He also set a record in 1997 by winning pole position at 12 consecutive Grand Prix meetings.

Mick Doohan (b. 14.6. 1965) made his debut on the international 500cc circuit at Suzuka Japan in 1989 and a few months later achieved the first of his 95 podium finishes with a third placing at Hockenheim, Germany. The following year he rode his Honda (the brand with which he had such a long and successful association) to victory at Hungoraring, Hungary, to notch up the first of his 54 career victories.

He finished third in the world championships that year, second the following two years and fourth in 1993 before beginning his spectacular five year run as world number one.

In 1997 he totally dominated the sport, winning a world record 12 Grand Prix events in a season.

He retired at the end of the 1999 season.
