“When considering the stature of an
athlete or for that matter any person, I set
great store in certain qualities which I
believe to be essential in addition to
skill. They are that the person conducts
his of her life with dignity, with integrity,
courage, and perhaps most of all,
with modesty. These virtues are totally
compatible with pride, ambition, and
competitiveness.”

Sir Donald Bradman speaking at his
induction into The Sport Australia Hall of
Fame, 1985

Glenn McGrath - Cricket

Glenn McGrath at the age of 37, ended his 13 year career in spectacular style. At the ICC World Cup in the West Indies in April he took 26 wickets to help give Australia its third successive World Cup victory and, with 71 wickets, overtake Pakistan's Wasim Akram as the most successful bowler in World Cup history.. Just three months earlier he had taken his 563rd Test wicket with his last ball in the Sydney Test. These achievements were all the more remarkable because he had taken much of the previous year off from cricket to be with his wife Jane after she was diagnosed with cancer for a second time. He now has an active role in the McGrath Foundation raising funds for cancer research.
