“When considering the stature of an
athlete or for that matter any person, I set
great store in certain qualities which I
believe to be essential in addition to
skill. They are that the person conducts
his of her life with dignity, with integrity,
courage, and perhaps most of all,
with modesty. These virtues are totally
compatible with pride, ambition, and
competitiveness.”

Sir Donald Bradman speaking at his
induction into The Sport Australia Hall of
Fame, 1985

WELCOME FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Welcome to The Sport Australia Hall of Fame. We exist to inspire all Australians by recognising and promoting the outstanding sporting achievements of our greatest athletes, and encourage everyone, young and old, to reach their sport and life potential. We aim to preserve Australia's rich sporting heritage by honouring these great athletes, and use the values and experience of our Members to inspire our future stars.

SAHOF HISTORY

The Sport Australia Hall of Fame has grown into something most unique in the world, and is one of a kind in Australia, representing all the Legends of Australian sport.

On December 10, 1985, 120 inaugural Members were inducted into the Hall of Fame, including Sir Donald Bradman as the first inductee and Dawn Fraser as the first female inductee. As at October 2009, 494 Australians have been inducted into the Hall as Members, not only representing all sports, but also in roles supportive to athletes. To further recognise the achievements of some of our true champions, the Hall introduced Legend status. We have now honoured 30 Members as Legends of Australian Sport, with one Member of the Hall being elevated each year.

With the Prime Ministerof the day, as the Patron in Chief, the Hall of Fame membership comprises an illustrious group of Australia’s most respected and celebrated champions that span time, sports, and legends. They are the best of the best, who through their achievements have made a significant contribution to Australia, and inspired young and old alike from every corner of this great land.

As well as recognising Australia's greatest athletes and those who have served in supporting roles to them, the Hall also presents a number of awards; The 'Don' Award, named after Sir Donald Bradman, is awarded annually to honour a current Australian athlete or athletes who, by their achievements and example over the last 12 months, are considered to have had the capacity to most inspire the nation; The Team Sport Australia Awards are awarded annually to recognise teams who have contributed significantly to Australia's reputation as a great sporting nation; and The Spirit of Sport Award, granted at the Board's discretion, acknowledges an extraordinary sporting achievement and performance that captures the hearts of the nation.

Together with recognising our past sporting greats, the Hall of Fame is now also dedicated to inspiring Australia's future athletes. Aimed at young athletes under 21 years of age, The Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship program takes the Hall of Fame values, otherwise known as the 'Spirit of Sport', to young Australians, encouraging them to reach their sport and life potential. What makes this program unique is that SAHOF Members are mentors to the scholarship recipients, making it one of the most sought after scholarships available for aspiring athletes in Australia.

The Hall of Fame will continue to recognise the outstanding achievements of Australia's greatest sportsmen and women, as well as inspiring the next generation to follow in their footsteps.
