Sport Australia Hall of Fame is deeply saddened by the sudden loss of one of our most dedicated staff members, Operations Manager, Maxine Corcoran. Maxine’s courageous fight against cancer demonstrated perfectly her trademark strength and determination, qualities which she carried through to all aspects of her life.

Maxine Corcoran, Kelly Hetherington and Danielle Cirillo.

A loving and beloved wife and mother, Maxine cherished her family, her friends and her sport, showing tremendous dedication to all three. Always thinking of the good of others before her own, Maxine continually went out of her way take care of those around her, and for that we are all extremely grateful.

Maxine joined the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2007 and worked tirelessly to bring new life and innovative ideas to SAHOF’s events and programs. With her boundless energy and enthusiasm Maxine was an inspiration to all here at SAHOF. She was a much loved part of our team, and will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.

With an unyielding passion for helping promising young athletes achieve their goals in sport and life, Maxine’s legacy here at SAHOF will live on through her hard-work to develop the SAHOF Scholarship and Mentoring Program.

Maxine truly believed in the idea of ‘paying it forward’ and the sharing of experiences with the next generation of Australian champions. Always true to her beliefs, Maxine passed on her knowledge and expertise as a dedicated coach at Glenhuntly Athletics Club, where she led a determined and talented stable of athletes.

The motivational quote taped to Maxine’s office wall perfectly describes her outlook on life; ‘Limitations are like fears, they’re just illusions.’ Maxine’s unrelenting persistence to achieve her goals is a quality we all admired.

As an elite athlete, Maxine represented Australia at the Edmonton Commonwealth Games, where she won silver in the women’s 4x400m relay, an achievement she repeated again at the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games. On a national stage Maxine was the 400m champion in both 1978 and 1979.

Maxine’s involvement in her beloved sport of athletics continued in her work as Vice President of Athletics International where she coordinated the Athletics International Mentoring Program of Athletic Australia’s Under 19 and Under 21 squads.

The Sport Australia Hall of Fame, it’s Board of Directors, Members and Staff extends our most sincere condolences to Maxine’s husband Danny, and her three children Nicholas, Daniel and Bridget, and her extended family. We wish them the strength and courage to endure this difficult time.

When considering the stature of an athlete or for that matter any person, I set great store in certain qualities which I believe to be essential in addition to skill. They are that the person conducts his of her life with dignity, with integrity, courage, and perhaps most of all, with modesty. These virtues are totally compatible with pride, ambition, and competitiveness.
